Planning & Development

Trees are a material consideration in the UK planning system, some may even be a material constraint to development. Local Planning Authorities (LPA) have a statutory duty to consider the protection and planting of trees when granting permission for proposed developments.

When applying for planning permission, for a site with existing trees on or adjacent to it, the LPA will require your application to be accompanied by an Arboricultural Report to British Standard 5837:2012 which includes:

  • a tree survey and tree categorisation;
  • an Arboricultural Impact Assessment (AIA);
  • a Tree Protection Plan (TPP); and
  • Arboricultural Method Statements (AMS).
